Est. 2020 — Ayrshire
Our Story
From a one-man band in Ayrshire to the UK's top tradesperson. This is how Test My Electrics became what it is today.
Built on a simple idea: do the job properly.
Neil Claxton started Test My Electrics in 2020 with a straightforward philosophy: turn up on time, do the work to the highest standard, charge a fair price, and leave the customer's home or business better than you found it.
It sounds simple. In practice, it means investing in proper accreditation, training engineers to the highest standard, building systems that ensure every certificate is correct, and never taking shortcuts — even when a shortcut would be easier.
That approach built a reputation. Word spread. The team grew. And in September 2026, Neil was crowned Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2026 — selected from thousands of exceptional tradespeople across the UK and Ireland, recognised for his commitment to high standards, developing the next generation of electricians, supporting his team and giving back to the local community. "Safety isn't optional; it's wired into everything we do."
Six years. One direction.
The milestones that shaped Test My Electrics.
Founded in Ayrshire
Neil Claxton launched Test My Electrics as a sole trader, building a reputation for honest pricing, quality workmanship and a genuine commitment to electrical safety. The focus from day one: do the job properly, every time.
Growing the Team
Demand grew quickly. Neil brought on his first engineers and the business moved from sole trader to a proper team operation. SELECT membership and NAPIT registration were secured early — non-negotiable standards that every certificate we issue depends on.
Commercial Work & Fleet
Test My Electrics expanded into commercial electrical work — taking on retail, hospitality, offices and light industrial projects across Ayrshire. The branded fleet grew to match, making TME a visible presence on roads across the county.
Apprenticeships & Training
We committed to growing the next generation of Ayrshire electricians. Our apprenticeship programme brought young people into the trade with proper mentoring, structured training and a clear career path. Several of our current engineers started as TME apprentices.
Ayrshire Chamber & Community
Test My Electrics became a Platinum Partner of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, deepening our roots in the local business community. We also joined BNI and South Ayrshire Trusted Trader — reinforcing our commitment to local accountability.
Solar PV & EV Charging
We expanded our services to include solar PV installation, battery storage and EV charger installation — responding to the energy transition happening across Ayrshire homes and businesses. OZEV-approved for EV charger grants.
Screwfix Top Tradesperson — National Champion
On 25th September 2026, Neil Claxton was crowned Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2026 at Screwfix Live — selected from thousands of exceptional tradespeople across the UK and Ireland. Recognised for his commitment to high standards, developing the next generation of electricians, supporting his team and giving back to the local community. The whole TME team made it happen.

What we stand for
The values that have guided Test My Electrics from day one.
Safety first, always
Every job we do — from a single socket to a full commercial rewire — is completed to the highest standard. We don't cut corners. We don't rush. Safety isn't optional; it's wired into everything we do.
Transparent pricing
Fixed-price quotes before we start. No hidden extras, no surprises on the invoice. We believe customers deserve to know exactly what they're paying before any work begins.
Proper certification
Every job is certified correctly. EICRs, installation certificates, minor works — issued same day where possible, recognised by local authorities, letting agents and insurers.
Investing in people
Our apprenticeship programme is one of the things we're most proud of. Growing the next generation of Ayrshire electricians is good for the trade, good for the community, and good for our customers.
Rooted in Ayrshire
Test My Electrics isn't just based in Ayrshire — we're part of it. Our engineers live here. Our apprentices are from here. We sponsor local events, support local businesses and invest in the community that has supported us.
Our apprenticeship programme is one of the things we're most proud of. We've taken young people from Ayrshire and given them a career in the electrical trade — with proper mentoring, structured qualifications and a team that genuinely cares about their development.
When Neil won Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2026, it wasn't just a win for him. It was a win for every member of the TME team, and for Ayrshire.
