We are absolutely over the moon to announce that our founder, Neil Claxton, has been crowned Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2026 — the most prestigious award in the UK trades industry.

Out of hundreds of entries from across the UK and Ireland, Neil was selected as one of just 10 finalists. On 25th September 2026 at Screwfix Live, he stood in front of a panel of industry experts — and walked away as the national winner.

This is a monumental achievement, not just for Neil, but for every single person on the Test My Electrics team, and for Ayr and Ayrshire as a whole.

What Is Screwfix Top Tradesperson?

Screwfix Top Tradesperson is one of the most respected awards in the UK trades industry. It recognises not just technical skill, but the values that define a truly outstanding tradesperson — dedication to customers, commitment to the community, and a genuine passion for the craft.

The judging panel included industry leaders from CIPHE, NICEIC, and the FMB, alongside the outgoing champion. Winning this title puts Neil in the company of the very best tradespeople the UK has ever produced.

Why Neil Won

Neil has spent over 21 years mastering his craft in and around Ayr. His career has been defined by resilience, community spirit, and an unwavering commitment to doing right by his customers, his team, and the people around him.

He impressed the judges not just with his technical expertise, but with the story of what he has built — a growing team of electricians, apprentices, and support staff, united by a culture of excellence, honesty, and genuine care.

Neil regularly visits schools to champion apprenticeships and practical trades as rewarding career pathways. He believes passionately in giving the next generation the support and opportunities they need to build successful careers of their own.

He and the Test My Electrics team have also donated their time and expertise to convert a bus for a charity supporting disabled children — a project that perfectly captures the values at the heart of this business.

In Neil's Own Words

"I am absolutely delighted to have won Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2026. I still have the same passion for the trade as I did at the very start of my career, and to be recognised in this way means the world to me. This is for the whole team — every engineer, every apprentice, every person who has helped build Test My Electrics into what it is today. And it's for Ayr. We're putting this town on the map."
